The housing boom and bust in Miami has proven the vulnerability of renters in the city. Examples of renter vulnerability:
- Foreclosures are evicting Miami renters disproportionately and without fault of our own.
- More than 50% of Miami Homes are over 50 years old, severely distressed, and not energy efficient.
- Very few Miami Renters have access to Green Healthy Housing
- Miami has a severe lack of public resources for Miami renters to protect and defend their human right to housing.
- Currently code enforcement is divided between the city, the county, and the state for multi-unit rental property. This division has created a culture of inconsistent and ineffective code enforcement.
- Florida Rental laws Suck! Renters can be forced to move within 15days or have legal action filed against them.
- Many low-income and very low-income people are denied the protections of a termed lease agreement
- Renters are marginalized in civic processes despite being the majority of the city tax base.
In the absence of a tenant rights movement these issues combined to make Miami prime real estate for unscrupulous landlord practices and human rights violations.
