In 2008, Power U Center partnered with Florida Legal Services, Florida International University RISEP, The Advancement Project, and the Data Center to launch a participatory research & survey project about the condition of renters in Miami. Through these partnerships we have created the 2,000 Renter Voices Survey and are conducting research with our current members from the Overtown & Liberty City communities. The research will be used to guide the Renter Majority Projects agenda to address issues facing renters in the city.
Renters Make up over 70% of the Miami's population and should be instrumental in all decisions made for the City. The Renter Majority must be organized to effectively participate in Miami civic processes. Politicians, government services, and private industry should operate with a fundamental objective to be Renter Friendly. Renters in the City of Miami must concretely and collectively articulate what is best for ALL renters to be prosperous. The prosperity of renters is the truest foundation of City prosperity. Renters have the potential to be the engine that spurs green industry and green investments, thus making Miami a true 21st Century City.
Considering that renters make up 70% of the homes in Miami we are also a large percentage of the cities workforce. The housing and economic crisis has put many renters out of work. The Renter Majority Projects seeks to put our folks back to work, doing things that will make Miami a Green & Healthy 21st Century City. Green Industry can and should be spurred through retrofitting rental homes in Miami.
