Overview: Power U has an exciting opportunity in warm
and sunny Miami for someone with energy and commitment to grassroots organizing
for social justice. This is an excellent
position for an experienced director looking for a change or someone with
organizing experience who is ready to take the next step professionally. This person will be building a vision for
Power U and developing strategies for bringing that vision to life.
Power U is
a grassroots organization based in downtown Miami struggling to bring about
social justice for people of color. We
use community organizing to build the leadership of the community and fight against
environmental and social racism. Our
current campaigns include the Renter Majority project, which is fighting for a
Renters Bill of Rights, Restorative Justice Now! youth program fighting to end
the criminalization of youth in schools, and the POWERful Women and Families
program which seeks to reduce the disparity in infant mortality rates among
low-income Black and Latino communities and the development of a Sustainable
Community Benefit Agreement for the Historical Black Overtown.
The Director
of Organizing is one of two co-Directors for the organization. While each Director will have separate roles
and responsibilities, decisions affecting the organization will be made
jointly. The Directors will consult with
each on a regular basis about all aspects of the organization. The primary role
of the Director of Organizing is to manage all aspects of programming,
campaigns, and advocacy for Power U's members and constituents, as well as
raise sufficient funds to implement activities.
