Forum today will examine changing area

Wary that the construction cranes in downtown Miami will soon invade their neighborhood and forever change its character, residents of the city's Overtown area are demanding answers from local and state officials.
Chief among the residents' concerns are whether rising property values spurred by developments such as the planned $220 million Crosswinds condominiums near Miami Arena will price them out of Overtown, whether city officials have a plan for affordable housing and if the expected gentrification of their neighborhood will create jobs.
On Saturday, city officials who see such promise in Overtown redevelopment are likely to be grilled by residents who see development as something to fear when the Power U Center for Social Change, a grassroots organization, hosts a community meeting at Booker T. Washington High School auditorium in Overtown.
