People affected by social, economic, and envrionmental problems should be on the front lines of change. We were formed to organize the disenfranchised, to develop strong indigenous leadership, to enhance the political analysis of grassroots leaders, and to build the power necessary to change injustices at their roots.
The Power U Center for Social Change offers several programs to build knowledge and understanding of the political environment and to develop leadership and organizing skills. Through Power University, the College of Leadership, Saturday School, membership exchanges, and the community film series, members are introduced to and discuss basic civic, political, social, and economic concepts. They then serve as a think-tank for the issues of the community and contribute as leaders in organizing actions for systemic change. They lead the charge in advocating for justice on challenges like public housing, jobs for the jobless, criminalization of youth, and building a new place of respect for the marginalized.
We are constantly expanding our membership base and building leaders. This adds force to our fight for progressive social change in Miami and beyond. We are an important center for movement building in South Florida; to maintain this momentum we will continue to invest in the development of our members and build linkages between those who share the same struggle. The combination of leadership development and community organizing will ensure that the our successes have meaningful and long-term impact on the community.
